Compatibility & Synastry, Explained

Synastry is the part of astrology that compares two whole charts, not just two Sun signs. It's how you move past 'are Scorpio and Taurus compatible?' to how two specific people actually fit.

What synastry actually is

Synastry overlays two birth charts and looks at how each person's planets touch the other's. Your Mars landing on their Venus, your Moon meeting their Sun, these contacts describe the chemistry, the friction, and the rhythm between two people. It's a relationship read built from two full charts, which is why it gets specific in a way "your signs are compatible" never can.

Why Sun-sign compatibility falls short

"Are Gemini and Virgo compatible?" is the wrong-sized question. It compares one placement from each person and ignores the dozen others that decide whether you actually click. Two Geminis can have wildly different Moons and Venuses, the things that drive emotional rapport and attraction. Real compatibility lives in those contacts, not in the headline. (New to placements? Start with the big three.)

What synastry looks at

  • Moon contacts: emotional safety and "do we feel at home with each other."
  • Venus and Mars: attraction, affection, and how desire and effort meet (the romantic core).
  • Mercury: how you talk, banter, and resolve things. This is the workhorse of friendships and working relationships.
  • Sun and rising contacts: whether you "get" each other's basic identity and style.

Romantic and platonic aren't the same read

Here's where most compatibility tools quietly fail: they assume every relationship is romantic. But the contacts that make a great friendship aren't the same ones that make a great romance. A strong Mercury-to-Mercury, easy Moon rapport, and shared values can make two people inseparable friends while the Venus and Mars spark for romance just isn't there, and that's a feature, not a flaw.

That's why our compatibility reading lets you choose the relationship type (romantic or platonic) before you run it. The same two charts get interpreted against what actually matters for that bond, so a friendship gets read as a friendship instead of a romance that's "missing something." Most tools can't do that. Ours is built for it on the compatibility page.

How to read your own

You'll need both people's birth details (date, time, and place) for an accurate synastry read (birth time especially, since it sets the rising sign and houses). From there you pick romantic or platonic, and the reading focuses on the contacts that matter for that kind of relationship.
